Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a unique special hospital and school for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, is seeking a:

Certified Nursing Assistant

*Full Time*

  • Provides personal care tasks to an assigned patient or group, which meets their hygiene, safety, comfort, nutritional, elimination, activity, and social needs.
  • Carries out all responsibilities in accordance with the individual’s personal plan of care, including nursing, therapeutic, dietary, and behavioral interventions.
  • Participates in nursing report at the beginning of each work shift prior to working with patients.
  • Assists the nurse in observing patients and communicates any problems in completing tasks or changes in the patient’s status.
  • Respects the patient’s rights, concerns, privacy, and dignity at all times.
  • Checks patient for reddened areas and signs of skin breakdown, and reports findings to the nurse immediately.
  • Notifies the nurse when a patient complains about or exhibits signs of pain or injury.
  • Participates and contributes to departmental and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow directions, both oral and written, and works cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Ensures that all documentation requirements are completed during the work shift.
  • Establishes and maintains positive interpersonal relationships with patients, family members, and other staff members.
  • Obtain patient vital signs. Alert the nurse if there are any vitals that are not within normal limits.
  • Check blood glucose levels as per physician’s order and performs QC of glucometers daily.
  • Set up/label feeding bags for the following day (night shift).
  • Replace/label irrigation sets weekly on Fridays.
  • Empty urostomy/colostomy bags and give output to nurse. Alert nurse to any changes in output (i.e. foul smelling, cloudy urine, etc.)
  • Clean urostomy drainage bags.
  • Connect/disconnect G-Tube extension tubing for transfers, showers, etc.
  • Fax Hillsborough report (day shift).
  • Update white boards.
  • Check trip book/notify nurses of patients attending trips.

    Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate well in English both verbally and in writing.
  • College credits in healthcare would be a plus.
  • Completion of a Certified Nurses Aid training course with a current certificate valid in the State of New Jersey for a hospital setting.
  • Heartsaver CPR certification required.

    While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom -- severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
