Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a unique special hospital and school for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, is seeking a:

Plumber/Maintenance Mechanic

*Full Time*

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate, troubleshoot, repair, inspect and maintain plumbing equipment including but not limited to, faucets, lavatories, toilets, flush valves, sinks, water heaters, drinking fountains, domestic water heaters and boilers, back flow devices, valve and water meters.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs at all Matheny locations including group homes.
  • Respond to emergency plumbing calls such as clogged drains, broken water lines, frozen pipes, gas odors and possible gas leaks. Evaluate and take proper corrective action.
  • Install new plumbing fixtures, including but not limited to, sinks, commodes, urinals, faucets, drinking fountains, etc.
  • Recommend repair needs to maintenance manager to potentially eliminate ongoing and future repairs.
  • Participates in all areas of maintenance department responsibilities.
  • Assist other trades with piping and repair issues.
  • Perform others duties as assigned.
  • Picks ups various supplies, parts, and building materials and delivers items to various locations as needed.
  • Assembles and installs equipment as necessary.
  • Completes preventative maintenance checks according to schedule and documents/reports as required by regulations.
  • Provides on-call service on a scheduled basis.
  • Completes maintenance work orders.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all emergency systems and procedures including fire alarm procedures.
  • Assembles and installs equipment as necessary.
  • Snow plowing and shoveling when required.
  • Performs a wide variety of skilled and complex maintenance requests ensuring that maintenance issues are resolved in a safe, effective and timely manner. Repairs and projects include but not limited to plumbing, electrical and lighting, painting and spackling, sheetrock repair and installation, carpet installation and landscaping.
  • Participates with all Joint Commission requirements and records testing and provides documentation of all work performed.
  • Participates with fire drills, generators testing, and records all testing results.
  • Participates in all areas of maintenance services as needed and as requested,
  • Participates in appropriate staff meetings, as required, as well as professional growth opportunities.
  • Respects basic human rights, dignity and confidentiality of persons served as well as property belonging to others.
  • Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Attends all required staff in-services.
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment for all concerned.
  • Effectively communicates with department head, co-workers, persons served, their families, and outside agency personnel as appropriate.
  • Commits time necessary to the job to ensure appropriate staffing and completion of duties and responsibilities.
  • Effectively manages time at work.
  • Complies with Employee Health requirements.
  • Complies with Matheny policies, procedures, standards of performance and Code of Conduct.
  • Approved background check required from all appropriate government agencies.
  • New Jersey Department of Education background check clearance or emergent hire approval required, if applicable.
  • Assists co-workers in the event absences create staff shortages or during emergency staffing situations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    To qualify:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. required, or equivalent vocational school or short term courses resulting in Master Plumbers license a plus.
  • Five or more years of experience in related trade.
  • New Jersey Driver’s license required.
  • Black Seal Boiler Operator license preferred.
  • Backflow Prevention Certification preferred at hire.
  • Asbestos training.
  • Master Plumbers License a Plus
  • Materials and Equipment Operating Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations. Ability to read blue prints.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computer and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of plumbing repair and maintenance equipment and efficient use of repair parts and tools required for hire.

    While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom -- severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
