Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a unique special hospital and school for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, is seeking a:

PUBLIC RELATIONS/VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT *Full Time*

We are seeking a leader who can motivate and inspire volunteers, current donors, and potential donors. The ideal candidate must possess the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences in a respectful and forthright manner. The goal is to ensure that our organization is always staffed with the best and most reliable individuals who will assist in moving our mission forward.

Responsibilities include:

  • Under the guidance of the PR/Volunteer Coordinator, maintains open communication with volunteers, staff, and patients/students to determine the need for volunteer services and assess volunteer satisfaction and ensures the purpose of the organization and its actions are clearly communicated;
  • Assists the Volunteer Coordinator with interviews of prospective volunteers to determine their appropriateness and places them accordingly;
  • Responds to inquiries made by individuals and groups regarding volunteer service;
  • Assists with preparations for volunteer orientation and other specialized training;
  • Assists with maintenance of all volunteer records and produces a well-organized calendar of volunteer activities;
  • Assists with the coordination of community service programs with schools and corporations;
  • Assists with special events and the coordination of related volunteer services for large-scale projects and events. Includes taking photos and videotaping events for promotional purposes.
  • Researches methods and resources and identifies trends for the improvement of volunteer services and development;
  • Assists with promoting the institution and upcoming events through effective public relations, advertising, and marketing activities;
  • Assists with maintenance of Matheny’s social media pages, webpages and assists with creating engaging text, image and video content;
  • Assists with updating and improving the Matheny media list for disseminations of news stories, photos, and event promotion;
  • Assists with the procurement function for the department;
  • Assists with projects, layout and design of fliers, programs, newsletters, emails, other correspondence and reports as needed.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a related field required. Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public relations, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university preferred. Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.

    Computer proficiency, including use of Photoshop, Excel, Constant Contact, PowerPoint, WordPress and MS Word preferred. Experience with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge desired but not required.

    Experience working with multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram as well as knowledge of SEO, keyword research and Google Analytics preferred.

    Photography and/or videography experience preferred.

    Graphic design, social media management, and website development experience desired.

    Good interpersonal, organizational and written communication skills needed.

    Previous experience in volunteering, event planning, marketing, and and/or office administration in a healthcare setting preferred.

    While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom -- severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
