Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a unique special hospital and school for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, is seeking a:

Recreation Therapy Assistant

*Full Time*

Responsibilities include:

  • Plans, develops, and implements appropriate treatment programs for each student based on the results of the evaluation and consultation with the treating team.
  • Demonstrates ability to utilize departmental technology and adaptive equipment during treatment.
  • Documents according to departmental procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to plan, attend, and facilitate community trips based on client-related program goals and objectives.
  • Plans, develops, and implements leisure experiences which are appropriate for age and functioning level of clients.
  • Actively participates in departmental projects, performance improvement, and program development.
  • Works and communicates with treatment team members, sharing results of evaluations and therapeutic outcomes, regarding program goals and objectives consistent with needs and capabilities of each student.
  • Demonstrates safe handling techniques appropriate to the task, environment, and the individual.
  • Supervises volunteers as assigned.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform transdisciplinary and collaborative duties.

    To qualify, a High School diploma is required, and the candidate must be currently enrolled in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program in therapeutic service field.

  • Physical Therapy provides therapeutic interventions to help patients and students attain their optimal level of function. PTs at Matheny take a personal and client-specific approach to addressing each person’s individual needs. Services may include a neurodevelopmental treatment approach, integrated classroom treatment sessions and supportive services. Patients may receive services such as gait training, balance training, mobility training and therapeutic exercise. They may also benefit from adaptive tricycle riding, standing and alternate positioning programs developed by physical therapists. Our PTs play an active role in evaluating the positional and adaptive equipment needs of our patients. They are an integral part of our transdisciplinary team, working closely with our physicians in our specialty clinics and with educators, other therapists and nurses.

    While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom -- severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
