Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a unique special hospital and school for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities, is seeking a:

Responsibilities include:

In this role, the ideal candidate provides evaluation and treatment for articulation, voice, rhythm, and language impairments which interfere with a client’s ability to communicate effectively with others. Provides evaluation and training in the use of augmentative communications. Provides evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. Works as a member of a transdisciplinary treatment team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assesses, analyzes, and classifies students’ communication competencies and characteristics.
  • Plans, prepares and delivers treatment programs for students with speech and language deficiencies.
  • Provides diagnostic evaluations of students.
  • Implements an individualized educational program (IEP) in conjunction with parents and teachers for students who are eligible for speech and language services and in need of speech as a related service.
  • Provides individual and small group intervention sessions with students who have been classified.
  • Maintains records necessary for each student and completes all required reports.
  • Participates in the development and improvement of opportunities for disabled students by providing individual or group in-service experiences for staff and parents.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of students to determine appropriateness of their speech programs.
  • Serves as an educational resource to classroom teachers, team members and administrators, as necessary.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining special equipment needed for student communication and feeding.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education and other professional growth activities.
  • Maintains New Jersey Department of Education certification as a Speech/Language Specialist and a New Jersey license as a Speech/Language Pathologist.
  • Communicates effectively with Principal and/or designee.

    To qualify, a Master’s degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited college or university is required. In addition, you must possess the following:

  • American Speech and Hearing/Language Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech/Language Pathology (CCC).
  • New Jersey Department of Education Speech Correctionist or Speech/Language Specialist Certificate.
  • New Jersey Speech/Language Pathologist License.

    While the great majority of Matheny patients have cerebral palsy as their primary diagnoses, Matheny also has patients with spina bifida, Lesch-Nyhan Disease (LND) and a wide range of uncommon conditions including Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Cornelia De Lange syndrome, Wolf-Hirshorn syndrome and 4Q Deletion syndrome. Lesch-Nyhan Disease is a rare x-linked recessive disorder associated with cognitive impairment, high levels of uric acid in the blood, kidney involvement and the hallmark symptom -- severe and involuntary self-injurious behaviors. Matheny is recognized as the leading source of information on care issues regarding LND.
